Improvement Info Sheet

Read this Improvement information sheet carefully. I want you to understand and comprehend the many things that could be done to improve Your care and responsibilities of your sugar glider or gliders. Take the time to also think of other things that could be done in order to better things for you and your glider or gliders. This is something that is highly important that owners learn and understand. Below there are examples of things that can be done and watched out for. This is a good start for new ownerships and also for current ownerships.

Environments and Surroundings. Always check your glider's environment and surroundings. Check for not only areas that need cleaning but also check for health hassardous things. Remember that safety comes first. If the environment and surroundings are not safe then you have no right to own or care for a sugar glider. Here are some things that you can do in order to ensure your sugar gliders safety. have all wire cords covered with a plastic tubing. Not only will it help keep the gliders safe from health hassards but also help to keep the area looking more organized. Have all outlets coverd with plastic pieces. They should be snug tight enough so that the sugar glider can't pull it out. Do not.. I repeat DO NOT use tape to cover your outlets! The sugar gliders are capable of chewing the tape off and are capable of getting stuck to the tape causing pain the the skin and possible uclers. We don't want that now do we. Check for any figurines that you have on shelves or stuffed animals that are up high and easy for the sugar gliders to knock down. If you want to let your sugar glider run around the room.. make sure you take all these unsafe things done and put them where the sugar gliders can not get to them. Do not have anything out that has liquids in it if not able to supervise, such as cups with drinks in them. It only takes one second for them to jump in and drown. Do not have any house cleaners siting or lay ing around in that area when your glider is out. Those cleaners should be in a special place any way. If you you have an open trash can in that area, take it out to another room. Sugar gliders like to jump in and explore the trashy world that lay within the trash can. I know from experience. If you live in a house with the old fashion heaters from the early 1900s, something like that, I suggest that you cover them up so that the sugar glider will not try to crawl inbetween the many spaces that it has and end up getting stuck, or just being hard to reach when it's time to put them back into the cage. If you live in a home with the built in floor heater, ac what'cha ma call it. =P I suggest that you cover those up just incase if your glider is able to slip into them and get stuck. There are many things that you need to look out for which I have not listed in this paragraph. Alot of them are common sense. It's not like child proofing your home... it's more than that. Sugar gliders require a special kind of care that has way more responsiblity than your average everyday pet.

Cage Cleaning. Have you been keeping up with your cage of cages each week? Check to make sure that you have been cleaning your cage or cages at least once a week. In the mean time in between cleanings give your cage or cages a wipe down at least every other day to insure that your gliders don't get sick from waste that may stick to the sides or flooring. Check for any food that may be stuck on the sides and flooring also.

Your sugar gliders over all appearence. Does your sugar glider look healthy, clean, and groomed well? Check your gliders throughly to make sure that they are in the best of health. Check the face and it's features, check the skin and fur, the feet and toes, hands and fingers, and don't forget the reproductive areas for any signs of illness, cause for future illness, or cause for any kind of health problems that could occur in the future.

Toys and accessories. You must check your sugar gliders toys and accessories often to ensure the safey and health hassards of your glider. Check to make sure that they will not break easily causeing your glider to fall and break any bones. Make sure that there are not small pieces that will cause your sugar glider to choke on. Check for galanized metal parts which can cause health problems in the future if not taken out of the care. Make sure you have the appropriate cage for your sugar glider or sugar gliders. Do not use galanized metal cages. I suggest you use pvc coated or powerd coated cages with alot of space in it for your glider to jump around. Check for any sharp edges that could cause issues in the future. When you go out and buy any toys for your sugar glider or gliders, make sure that you inspect it for any health hassards or galanized metal parts. I suggest that you test the toys to ensure safety. Safety always comes first. Check pouches for any loose strings. You should not see any strings at all. They can cause your glider to lose a foot or something. It could also cause your glider to lose his/her life. We don't want to end up with a sad ending now do we.

Refer to your weekly and monthly charts. You should always refer to your weekly and monthy charts if you have them. It's not required to have charts but would be recommended. These charts that several care givers, owners, breeders, and those who sell pets are able to understand more about who they are careing for and what goes on. Almost like in hospitals and nursing homes. They use a daily chart to understand their patients and keep track of their health, personlities, likes, dislikes, and diets. It is highly recommended that charts be used if you care for more than 4 gliders or if you are a rescuer or breeder. It is required for those who are in zoology or anything that is related, to use charts daily, weekly, and monthly.

Diet. It's best to use a special diet instead of creating your own,.. unless if you know what you are doing and understand everything that is needed in the diet. You must know what is toxic and what is not. You have to know how much of everything is needed. It requires alot of math and knowledge in order to get things right. There are several kinds of diets that have been developed for sugar gliders to eat. Since many of us don't live in the gliders home land we don't have everything that is needed for a good diet... so therefore we have to find substitutes that will work just as well as the foods in the gliders home land. The most widely used diet is called the BML. It's not the only one that is used by owners. Some prefer other diets over the BML. You can also determine weither it is the right diet to use by your sugar gliders. Some gliders may not like the diet that you give them. You will then look for another diet and try that one. Make sure that you can get all the supplies for it first before you try to make it. Read the instructions carefully and check for anything that you should not give them. Some of the ingridents are very specific. Such as honey, you can't use raw or cone... it's best to use store bought. You should also read the label to make sure it is not raw.
